Just a short 25-minute drive north from Illukawela Walauwa lies Sankapala Raja Maha Viharaya, an extraordinary rock temple where the lush mountains of Ratnapura begin to break away into the sun-drenched southern plains. Nestled against a towering cliff face, this sacred site spans over two millennia of history, moving from the bloody battlefields of kings to the absolute silence of ancient hermitages.
The very name of the temple evokes ancient lore. Sankha translates to conch shell—the signature battle-emblem of Giant Pussadeva, one of King Dutugemunu’s ten legendary warriors (Dasamaha Yodayas) from the 2nd century BC. Known for his terrifying, thunderous ability to blow the war conch to rally troops, Pussadeva was gifted 12,000 acres of land in Pallebedda by the king as a reward for his bravery.
Overwhelmed by the heavy toll of war, the giant chose to renounce his worldly titles and wealth. He entombed his legendary conch shell deep inside the mountain rock, took the robes of a Buddhist monk, and retired to the cliffside caves of Sankapala, eventually achieving enlightenment as an Arahant (saint).
What You Will Find Inside:
The 14 Ancient Caves: Explore the labyrinthine system of natural drip-ledge rock caves where ascetic monks meditated beneath centuries-old Brahmi inscriptions.
The Kandyan Masterpieces: Admire the beautiful image houses boasting traditional red-and-white Kandyan-era murals, detailed wood carvings, and serene Buddha statues.
Integrated Shrines: Witness the beautiful coexistence of faiths with dedicated cave shrines for deities like Lord Vishnu and God Kataragama integrated seamlessly into the complex.
The Cryptic Poetic Screen: At the entrance of a smaller cave, look closely at an 18x18 grid of Sinhalese consonants. This is the famous Barasa Kavya puzzle written by the monk Karathota Dharmarama while imprisoned by King Rajadhi Rajasinghe in the 18th century. The sheer cryptographic brilliance of the poem so astounded the king that he immediately ordered the monk's release and restored the neglected temple back to its former glory.
